Michigan will soon be the latest state to offer online and mobile sports betting, online casino gambling and eventually, online poker to its residents.

Michigan launched retail sports betting in March, but the excitement was short-lived. Within five days, the COVID-19 pandemic shut down all North American sports, as well as the casinos that housed these new sportsbooks.

State regulators put the down time to positive use, ramping up the blueprint so that they could speed up the arrival on online betting across the state. Michigan is anticipating that it will go live with online sports betting by late in 2020, or early in 2021 at the latest.

The Status of Michigan Online Gambling

Online gambling is legal in Michigan as of late 2019. House Bill 4311 or the Lawful Internet Gaming Act was signed into law by Governor Gretchen Whitmer on Dec. 19, 2019. The bill allows online gambling activities to take place throughout the Wolverine State.

Casino properties in Michigan have the right to open online casino sites available for people who are either residents of Michigan, or present in Michigan at the time of the placing of their wager. The three commercial gaming locations and the 24 tribal casinos around the state are the only locations able to gain licenses to operate online gambling sites.

All online casinos in Michigan would provide tax proceeds to education systems throughout the state. Some of the funds will also go towards providing medical help for first responders throughout the state.

While retail sportsbooks are open for operation in Michigan, online betting is still in the process of being regulated. It’s expected that these sites will be operational by late 2020 or early 2021.

Such sportsbooks would make it easy for people in Michigan to bet on sporting events instead of having to travel across the Canada-US border to Ontario to do so. The sportsbooks in Michigan allow wagers to be placed on individual events, which is different from what people can do in Ontario. Parlays, wagers of two or more events in combination, are the only form of sports betting offered by the Ontario Lottery Corporation’s Pro-Line sports lottery.

What Is Expected Out of Michigan Gambling?

Michigan launched legal sports betting on March 11th, 2020. The state currently offers only in-person wagering. There are eight retail sports betting sites already open for business across the state, with the anticipation that another 17 casinos will add retail sites within the next several months.

Online sportsbooks and traditional casino games will be made available through partnership agreements with Michigan’s retail casinos. Already, these casinos have entered into partnership agreements with several of the prominent online sports betting brand operating in the USA.

Among the three Detroit casinos, the MGM Grand has its own online brand, BetMGM. The Motor City Casino is partnered with FanDuel, while the Greektown Casino currently operates its own branded retail sportsbook but is expected to pair up with Barstool Bets.

All three of those sites have opened their retail sportsbooks. Outstate, FireKeepers Casino is teamed with Scientific Games, while the three Four Winds Casinos in Dowagiac, Hartford and New Buffalo opted to go with Kambi. The Little River Casino teamed up with BetRivers.

Future sites preparing to launch include the Bay Mills Resorts (DraftKings), the Island Resport Casino (BetAmerica), the Gun Lake Casino (Parx), and the Northern Waters Casino (PointsBet). The Turtle Creek and Leelanau Sands Casinos are paired with William Hill, while both Ojibwa operations in Baraga and Marquette are going with Golden Nugget.

All five Kewadin Casinos – in Christmas, Hessel, Manistique, Ste. Ignace and Sault Ste. Marie – are going with GAN as their online partner. Odawa’s casinos in Petoskey and Mackinac City are paired with FOX Bet. Both the Saganing Eagles Landing Casino and Soaring Eagle Casinos intend to join the sports betting fray but are still in the process of lining up online partnerships.

Michigan players will need to be at least 21 years of age in order to legally bet on sports or through an online casino. They will also need to be physically present within state boundaries in order to play. GPS technology will be utilized to ensure that this is so.

Online Casino In Michigan

Michigan houses multiple retail casinos. Outside of three casinos situated within the city of Detroit, all of the remaining casinos operate on tribal lands.

Many of these gaming venues in Michigan also intend to add an online casino entity to their gaming empire. Each of the three Detroit-based casinos have confirmed that they will provide an online casino site. Other casinos already confirming plans to operate online casinos include Firekeepers, Little River, Bay Mills Resorts, Gun Lake, Island Resort, Kewadin, Northern Waters, Odawa, and Ojibwa.

Football

It’s likely that the state will set a goal of having online sports betting operational in time for the 2021 Super Bowl, which is the biggest sports betting day in North America.

What Are the Biggest Leagues In the State?

Michigan bettors can wager on home teams in almost every major North American sport. The NFL Detroit Lions are kings of the city, but MLB’s Detroit Tigers, the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings and the NBA’s Detroit Red Wings also hold on to a very fervent following. The PGA Tour stops annually in Detroit.

You can also place bets on college sporting events around Michigan, including ones that entail teams in the state. These include games involving Michigan, Michigan State, Oakland, the University of Detroit, Eastern Michigan, Central Michigan, Western Michigan, and Wayne State.

There are also several minor pro teams scattered around the state. You could place bets on the Grand Rapids Drive of the G League, the NBA’s official basketball feeder league. Bets may also be available for games involving teams such as the Flint City Bucks of USL League Two Soccer, the Lansing United of United Women’s Soccer, or the Grand Rapids Griffins of the AHL and Kalamazoo K-Wings of the ECHL.

Betting on amateur or high school sports is prohibited.

These sportsbooks offer a variety of betting markets. Everything from straight moneyline, spread and total wagering, to exotic bets such as props, futures, parlays and teasers are available.

Online Poker In Michigan

Online poker has been slow to arrive in the frenzy of activity since gambling was declared legal across the USA by a 2018 Supreme Court ruling. This is partially due to the fact that poker runs a distant third to sports betting and casino gambling when it comes to generating online betting handle.

So far, New Jersey, Nevada and Delaware have added online poker sites to the gambling repertoire. Pennsylvania has obtained online poker licenses, but no site has gone active yet.

Some Michigan sites also intend to enter the online poker fray.

In Detroit, the MGM Grand has an online poker agreement lined up with PartyPoker. The Odawa Casinos in Mackinac City and Petoskey are teaming up with PokerStars.

These sites are expected to launch either later in 2020 or early into 2021.

Can you gamble online in Michigan?

Online gambling became legal in Michigan at the end of 2019. After years of debates and rival proposals, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer finally signed three bills into law that legalized online gaming and betting.

The Lawful Sports Betting Act put into place a framework for existing land-based casinos to offer retail sportsbooks on their premises. In addition, licensed operators will be allowed to launch online and mobile sports betting sites and apps.

Sports betting gross revenue will be taxed 8.4%, while Detroit’s three commercial casinos will pay an additional 1.25% city tax. That’s lower than the 9.75% tax rate for sportsbooks currently charged in New Jersey.

So far, Detroit’s commercial casinos have opened retail sportsbooks on their premises but the state’s tribal casinos have been slow in catching up. All of Michigan’s casinos were shut down during the COVID-19 outbreak.

Online sportsbooks in Michigan are yet to open, but the first websites could launch by the end of 2020 or early 2021. Some major online operators are already in partnership with land-based casinos. Greektown Casino has partnered with DraftKings, Northern Waters Casino has partnered with PointsBet, and the Odawa Casino Resorts chain has partnered with The Stars Group.

In December 2019, Gov. Whitmer also signed HB 4311 – the Lawful Internet Gaming Act. This makes it legal for the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) to issue licenses to online casino and poker operators. Gamblers aged 21 or over in Michigan will also be allowed to play for real money on their smartphones and tablets.

Tax rates for Michigan online casino revenue will be higher than for sports betting. Operators will be charged 20% on revenues of $4m or less. A higher tax rate of 28% applies for gross gaming revenues above $12m.

There are no online casinos available in Michigan yet. However, the first online roulette tables and video slots should be available by the end of 2020 or early 2021 at the latest.

Finally, the Fantasy Contests Consumer Protection Act – HB 4308 – was signed, legalizing online Daily Fantasy Sports contests. Operators will be charged a fee for running online contests which are proving to be hugely popular across the United States.

How to fund an online betting account in Michigan: payment methods

It’s now legal to gamble online in Michigan for real money. When the first online casinos and sportsbooks appear, Michigan residents and visitors will be able to deposit and withdraw USD.

Players will be able to use a range of deposit options. Plus, daily limits will apply depending on the banking method. Judging by legalized online gambling sites in other states like New Jersey, fees will be low too.

Before making a deposit, Michiganders will have to supply a form of photo ID. This is to prove that they are over 21. Plus, it helps to confirm that the correct home address has been supplied.

Typical payment methods will include debit cards and credit cards from recognized providers like Visa, AMEX, and Mastercard. Acceptance rates may be low with some credit card deposits. Many US banks still won’t honor transactions if they are for the purpose of online gambling.

However, making debit card and credit card payments will be easy. Simply open the casino or sportsbook cashier and enter your card details when prompted. Your funds will appear instantly in your gambling account.

Prepaid cards will let you make safe deposits without declined payments. Fund a prepaid card with another valid debit or credit card, then move the cash into your online gambling account.

You will also be able to use a selection of e-Wallets for making quick online deposits. PayPal, Skrill and NETELLER are already accepted in some regulated US states.

Use a single e-Wallet to store cash from a number of cards or bank accounts. Then, simply transfer your funds with a single ID number or email address. E-Wallets are perfect for US gambling as they are quick, safe and anonymous. You can also enjoy low minimum deposit limits.

And if you live near a land-based casino in Michigan, you may be able to make deposits via the casino cage. Just deposit into your online account using cash in person. Funds will appear straight away, and you can even cash out your winnings when you’re ready.

If you don’t want to use a bank card or e-Wallet, a wire transfer is perfect. It lets you move USD straight from your checking account to your online casino, poker or sports betting account. Bank transfers can take a few days to clear, but they are 100 percent secure.
